Subaru BRZ STI, Chevy Camaro Hot Wheels, Ford Mustang Cobra Jet: Top Photos Of The Week

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

This week brought us the legendary SEMA Show, and of course all the news that came from Sin City included hot photos of modified cars–things as wild as a 500-horsepower Volkswagen Beetle, or a new twin-turbo Ford Mustang Cobra Jet. Also revealed at SEMA this week is a real life Hot Wheels car in the form of the Chevrolet Camaro Hot Wheels…

Chevrolet Sonic B-Spec Racer Concept

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

Lack of power notwithstanding, it’s damn near close to impossible to not like the Chevrolet Sonic.

As one of Chevrolet’s more popular models, the Sonic has received acclaim for its balanced handling and sporty driving experience, so much so, in fact, that the Bow Tie has jumped right into the increasingly popular B-Spec racing series with their very own Sonic B-Spec Race Car Concept.

Although still a preview of a competition kit for the race car, the Sonic B-Spec Racer is a bonafide pocket Hercules.

Dressed in a Luxor Blue paint finish with matching Monaco Blue graphics, the lightweight Sonic B-Spec Racer comes with a bevy of race spec modifications, particularly on the car’s chassis and suspension. The transformation from production model to full-fledged race car begins with the installation of front strut coil-over assemblies and mounts and rear shock coil-over assemblies and mounts. The car also received adjustable front stabilizer bar links, a rear axle shim kit, an inlet air restrictor, and a recalibrated ECM and EBCM.

Safety features were also added, including a carbon fiber safety seat, a window safety net, five-point racing harnesses, a Monaco Blue-painted roll cage, a center catch net, a quick-release steering wheel/hub system, and a fire extinguisher.

About the only thing disappointing about the Sonic B-Spec Racer Concept, albeit one that’s completely understandable, is the engine. To adhere to regulations, the Sonic Race Car Concept?s 1.8-liter engine remains the same from its stock specifications, although an air restrictor was used to equalize its output with other competitors.

In the end, this little beast is still pretty impressive, something GM US VP of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports Jim Campbell will attest to. ?[The] Sonic B-Spec Concept demonstrates the car?s capabilities in the increasingly popular B-Spec subcompact classes in SCCA and Grand Am series,? he said.

?The Sonic?s great balance of power and responsive handling make it a natural on the track ? and a formidable competitor.?

Expect the Sonic B-Spec competition kit to hit the sales market in the first quarter of 2013 through Chevrolet Performance retailers.

I?m No Dummy

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Statistics Canada reports that there are more than 26 million registered vehicles deemed fit to ply our 900,000km of Canadian roadway. Scion FR-S by Fatlace X

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Known mostly for their works on promulgating the hip-hop, break dancing, and graffiti scenes in San Francisco, Fatlace has evolved into acompany that’s also dug in deep in the aftermarket auto industry. At SEMA, they took a project Scion FR-S that they’ve been working on for quite some time, back when it was completely bone stock, and turned it into a stunning sports car with some of the zaniest aftermarket work.

The objective for Fatlace was to build a car that would showcase the right combination of aftermarket offerings into one exciting sports car. The first order of business, apart from disassembling the FR-S, was to give it a new aero kit, which they did by way of Rocket Bunny. With the new Rocket Bunny kit, Fatlace managed to channel the FR-S’ aggressiveness and added bolt-on fenders, a redesigned front and rear bumper, and a new rear diffuser. Lightwerkz LED headlights were also part of the package, as were the new set of Limited TE37SL wheels in gunmetal grey wrapped in Toyo Proxes RS1 tires and complemented by Brembo Gran Turismo front and rear brakes.

Inside, Fatlace kept the modifications at a minimum, opting only to install a pair of their Illest x Bride Zieg III Type R carbon fiber – and FIA-approved – bucket seats. These seats come with Bride?s Low Max seating position, enhancing the view of the road for the driver. Takata Racing’s new harness system, in black with Takata Green accents, was also installed, to keep the driver in their seats when things get a little hairy.

It’s no secret that the FR-S isn’t exactly a powerhouse on wheels. So to give the car an added roar, Fatlace installed Vortex?s new bolt-on supercharger system to go with a Koyo radiator to help keep the engine’s mechanics cool. A Cusco power brace was also installed, as well as a new stainless steel dual exhaust system from Greddy that gave the FR-S the kind of deep growl it deserves.

For luxury automaker Fisker, things just go from bad to worse. Rolls Royce Ghost

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

The 2013 Rolls Royce Ghost will embrace very subtle revisions to the interior upholstery and the infotainment system of the car. What possibly can they upgrade or facelift? It?s already the perfect car, but it will be seeing similar revisions already found in the Phantom Series 2, apart from the day-time LEDs.

Revisions in the 2013 Ghost were mostly concentrated on the infotainment system of the car. It features an all new, advanced amplifier with the addition of ?exciter? speakers. Sounds exciting? The upholstery now comes with natural grain leather and cross-banded wood veneers. If this is an option they are introducing now, what was the type of leather they were using? Printed leather? Certainly that wouldn?t go along with Rolls Royce?s reputation of building hand-made cars out of exclusive materials.

On the outside, a new alloy wheel option will be available for customers who aren?t satisfied with the current options along with an all new, cool feature called the Comfort Access Boot. This feature lets you open the boot using your feet with the help of a sensor under the rear bumper, should both hands be full. It?s a neat feature that doesn?t require the hassle of taking the key out of the pocket while juggling shopping bags, but in a Rolls Royce?

Though it cannot be considered an incremental upgrade at all, except the cool boot feature, the 2013 Rolls Royce Ghost is, nevertheless, a car that sticks true to the Rolls Royce tradition of absolute perfection, immaculate ride, and supreme refinement. What is your take on the 2013 Rolls Royce Ghost? Let us know in the comments section.

Volkswagen Beetle “Chopped Top” by Galpin Auto Sports

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Wow, VW hit SEMA really hard this year, especially with the Beetle. Pretty much every model of Beetle that was heading to SEMA ? Rotiform Beetle, Beach-Battle Cruiser Beetle, and the Super Beetle ? were all readily available with images, but the Chopped Beetle by Gaplin Auto Sports was not, for some reason.

Well, GAS has just released an image of this chop-top Beetle and some extra information. It is based on the 2013 VW Beetle Turbo, which means it features a 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a 6-speed transmission. There?s no mention of any additions to the engine, so we assume that it remains bone stock.

On the outside, GAS doused it with an Onyx Black base coat and accented the sides with Candy Apple Red metal-flake paint, giving it an awesome look. GAS then took to the top of the Beetle, hacking 5.5 inches off of the A-pillar and 2.5 inches off of the B-pillar, giving it that classic chop-top look, while retaining the classic humped roofline.

Adding to its bespoke look, GAS deleted the rear windows and added in rear air scoops in their place. If you have seen rodded beetles that retain their rear-mounted engines, this is a very common modification to get a little more airflow to the engine. Given this is a front-mounted engine, it?s just there for show.

Adding to its style is a set of 20-inch, 3-piece Forgiattos handmade rims. GAS them topped off the outside by adding tint to the headlights and taillights, giving this already sinister- and vintage-looking Beetle a little more darkness.

On the inside, the vintage treatment continued, as GAS tossed in vintage-style black leather that features red accent stitching. The headliner is dyed to match the vintage cow hide on the rest of the interior. Wrapping the inside and outside together, GAS painted the interior trim panels and dashboard with the same Candy Apple Red metal flake that sets off the exterior. We are still awaiting images of the interior and we will get them to you ASAP.

Overall, we think this was well worth the delay in getting the images, we just wish it had a little something extra under the hood.
