Video: Hennessey Venom GT Breaks Top Speed Record

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

It?s official, the Hennessey Venom GT has just become the fastest production car out there. On February 9, 2013, Brian Smith drove this modified Lotus Elise from 0 to 265.7 mph in 2 miles on a runway at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California.

This makes the Venom GT 7 mph faster than the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which required over 4 miles to reach its speed limiter, which is set at 258 mph. Still, this speed is a little less than the 270 mph top speed claimed by Hennessey when the Venom GT was initially announced.

This is the second record the Venom GT scored this year, as back in January it went from 0 to 186 mph in just 13.63 seconds.

Now we are left wondering what amazing results we are going to see when the Venom GT2 hits the market.

Rise in holiday bookings could bode well for Spanish property investment

Investors interested in property in Spain could benefit from more rental opportunities as more Brits choose to holiday in Europe.

According to a new study by Abta – The Travel Association, bookings to Spain have increased by 11 per cent compared to last year, showing that the destination is becoming more popular with holidaymakers.

Short breaks are also seeing more people travelling into the country, especially to Madrid, as economies around the world recover and capital has been freed up to boost overseas stays.

"During the recession, luxury holidays were substantially affected, but have now experienced a healthy comeback," Abta said in a statement.

"Customers are becoming increasingly adventurous with activity holidays surging in popularity," it added.

Abta noted earlier this year that Spain was the UK’s favourite holiday destination for breaks during the Easter period, with the Canary Islands and the Costa del Sol being the most popular hotspots among British travellers.

Subaru Uses Nickel-Metal Hydride On XV Crosstrek Hybrid

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Subaru’s first hybrid car won’t use the lithium-ion batteries that are now commonplace in many current alternative powertrains. Instead, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid will use nickel-metal hydride units, which were used mainly in older hybrid systems. The 2.0L boxer 4-cylinder engine is mated to a 13.4 horsepower electric motor, but the added 300 lbs of [...]

Review: Morgan 3 Wheeler

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

“YOUR CAR!!!! I LOVE YOUR CAR!!!!” She was a Slavic-faced woman in her mid-twenties, not bad for New York and positively model-grade by Midwestern standards, and she was literally hopping up and down on the streetcorner. “It’s not a car,” I said, wedged into the Morgan’s extremely tight drivers’ compartment, feeling self-conscious in a half-face [...]

SRT Preparing Camaro Z/28 Competitor

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

2.

SRT chief, Ralph Giles, isn’t the type to back down from a challenge. So when Chevrolet unveiled the track-focused Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, nobody was surprised when Giles told Motor Trend that his brand “was preparing for an answer” to the Z/28.

So the onus now turns to Dodge’s resident muscle car, the Challenger, to pick up and answer the call. Giles didn’t go into specific details regarding what that “answer” was going to be, but there’s already speculation that a Challenger will be that steed and it will come with what folks expect to be a doozy of a powertrain.

As far as expectations are concerned, ours is that SRT will fit a modified version of its 6.4-liter Hemi V-8. You know, the one that currently produces 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Add a couple of tweaks here and there and that output can easily be bumped up to around 500 horsepower, right around the same figure the Camaro Z/28 currently provides.

In addition to the more powerful engine, SRT could also make the Challenger lighter with the use of carbon-fiber parts to go with lighter suspension, bigger brakes and new track-focused wheels.

All this, of course, is a matter of conjecture. Yet we do know that SRT has something planned up its sleeve. Ralph Giles isn’t the type to double-talk, so when he says that an answer is coming, you can pretty much take that to the bank.

Spain popular among Brits

Spain popular among Brits

A recent survey has found that Spain remains one of the most popular destinations for investment for British property buyers.

Conducted by the Worldwide Property Group, the study found that nearly three quarters of people currently believe it is a good time to purchase a foreign property.

Indeed, this has led one real estate consultancy to claim that no other nationality has the same "enthusiasm" for buying overseas as the British.

According to the Digital Property Group, Spain is one destination that consistently attracts interest from investors, retirees and holiday home owners.

"The enthusiasm for buying property overseas is 50 years old. Only the British do this in this very enthusiastic way," Nigel Lewis, head of content at the company, said.

Property investors may want to take advantage of current low house prices in Spain, or keep an eye out for any distressed properties coming to the market which are often available at reduced prices.

Spanish property still weighing heavily on banks

Spanish property still weighing heavily on banks

Distressed Spanish property is still proving to be a thorn in the side of banks, with many expected to make bigger losses than previously hoped. Reuters reported that with Sareb now releasing toxic assets to the market, other banks are struggling to compete. Consequently, they are left with large volumes of real estate repossessed from borrows.

With financial institutions forced to make extreme cuts on distressed property – around 50-60 per cent – the situation is understandably weighing heavily on the country. What’s more, despite considerable discounts, demand for property is weak, with most foreign buyers looking for prime units.

Losses are proving to be unavoidable too, according to the newspaper. Should banks turn to private equity firms and hedge funds to clear their books of toxic assets, they will typically have to discount them by 60-80 per cent. Fernando Acuna of Taurus Iberica told Reuters: "The sale of secured assets to investors would likely be done at prices below those of the Royal Decrees (the government-enforced clean-up), with big discounts. The discounts from the decrees were more in line with the prices seen in the normal consumer market."

It isn’t just banks that are feeling the heat either, with real estate company Reyal Urbis filing for insolvency on Tuesday (February 19th). This is the second biggest corporate crash Spain has endured and reflects the impatience of banks with debt-strapped companies that are unable to recover from the property crash.

Reyal Urbis collapsed after they were unable to renegotiate €3.6 billion (£3.1 billion) worth of debt and despite having a property portfolio valued at €4.2 billion (£3.6 billion approximately), their asset values are lower than the money owed. The decision now lies with the courts whether or not to liquidate the firm, which may take years.

For banks, staying afloat is now a matter of being able to pick up the pace, selling off the majority of assets before Sareb gains momentum. Santander is just one institution taking this approach and claims it will aggressively rid itself of distressed property assets this year. The bank has set aside €1 billion in its budget to cover any losses. Santander chief executive Alfredo Saenz told Reuters: "If we can get in there before the Sareb starts achieving cruising speed, so much the better."

Spanish financial reform making ‘major progress’

Spanish financial reform making 'major progress'

Spain looks like it is finally getting back on the right track, with a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) pronouncing that the country’s financial reform has made "major progress". In a statement prior to the release of an official report, it was deemed that the "clean-up of undercapitalised banks has reached an advanced stage" and changes to the financial framework had either been "adopted or designed".

This is good news for those looking to invest in Spanish property, indicating that a period of stability could be just around the corner as the country enters the last stage of reform. According to the IMF delegation, the bulk of all measures for the entire program of reform have now been completed.

"Going forward, it will be important to maintain this momentum with strong completion of initiated reforms and continued vigilant oversight, as risks to the economy and hence to the financial sector remain elevated as Spain undergoes a difficult process of fiscal and external adjustment," the IMF said.

Although the country isn’t out of the woods yet, there are certainly reasons for optimism. While Spain is undoubtedly blighted by toxic assets and a saturated property market, certain factions are actually performing well. The Real Estate Agency noted that second home demand remains strong in the country, reporting a 90 per cent rise in sale volumes during 2012.

UK buyers are continuing to be among the most active in Spain, but new markets are also entering the fray. A new survey by the Malaga Developer’s Association revealed that Russians are now the second biggest group in Marbella investment, overtaking Germans who are traditionally dominant in the property sector.

Daniel Nilsson, regional manager of The Real Estate Agency, stated in January: "The last 12 months have been very positive for us having received over 5,200 enquiries for Spanish property and conducting some 1,600 viewings. From this we have seen the volume of deals and revenue rise by 90 per cent and 104 per cent respectively in 2012 compared with the previous year. Those are not the sales figures of a dead market!"

Kia Sportage Wonder Woman

Monday, April 1st, 2013

The latest installment of Kia’s superhero lineup was finally unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

This time, DC’s Wonder Woman was the recipient of the Korean automaker’s superhero-themed vehicles.

The Sportage Wonder Woman is actually the seventh of an eight-vehicle partnership between Kia and DC and for what it’s worth, it’s one of the better ones we’ve seen come out of the unique collaboration.

The exterior of the Sportage features a truly unique aerodynamic look with a red and blue exterior scheme that comes accented with the same stars Wonder Woman has in her get-up. Notice also the gold trim found throughout the vehicle; that?s a nod toward the heroine’s golden lasso. On the front, Wonder Woman’s famous eagle chest plate is prominently featured and integrated into the Sportage’s grille with matching blue headlight beams representing her eyes.

Rounding out the exterior modifications is Wonder Woman’s tiara, which is clearly visible on top of the Sportage’s windshield. The chrome side panels on the vehicle that serve as graphical interpretations of her invisible jet and the five-spoke wheel design complete the wonderful work done on the exterior to pay homage to DC’s resident super heroine.

Moving inside, Kia continued the Wonder Woman-inspired theme with red upholstery and dash pieces, as well as blue LED lighting to match the exterior treatment. There are also custom seats bearing Wonder Woman’s costume with embroidered logo prominently featured. Last but not least is the cargo area of the Sportage, which has a see-through panel displaying Wonder Woman’s full list of crime fighting accessories, including her tiara, bracelets and a glowing Lasso of Truth.

Wealthy Russians are heading to Spain

Wealthy Russians are heading to Spain

Investors looking for Spanish property will be pleased to see that tourism in the country is experiencing a boost from Russia. The Agence France Presse reported that the Eastern Europeans are heading to Spain in their droves, drawn by the sandy beaches, hot climate, history and culture the country can offer.

Roman Gavrilenko, a 26-year-old elementary school psychologist from Murom in western Russia, who visited the country, told the news provider: "People are very friendly. The Sagrada Familia was really, really impressive. It was psychedelic, it made my head spin."

With the number of visitors from Russia surpassing one million last year for the first time – a 39.8 per cent increase from 2011 – there are countless opportunities for investors to capitalise on this increased footfall in key holiday let areas. With property prices continuing to fall and a cash market emerging, conditions are ripe for buyers with money and good credit.

However, it isn’t just the lure of the Spanish coast that is attracting Russians to the country. In the former Soviet Union, the expanding middle class is developing an appetite for foreign travel. The Arab Spring has dented the interest in popular holiday destinations such as Egypt and Tunisia for many, to Spain’s advantage.

"During the Soviet era very few Russians had the privilege of travelling abroad. When Russia opened up to the world, Russians did not have any experience of travel and Spain was one of the countries that was most active in trying to capture clients," Mr Gavrilenko said.

Research from the Malaga Developer’s Association has also noted an increase in the number of Russians buying property in Spain. In fact, they are now the second largest group of investors, overtaking Germans. While the British continue to be the most active in the country, Russians are increasingly entering the market and are coming with plenty of fire power – financially speaking.

The extent to which Russians are increasing their presence in Spain can be seen by the fact that plans are now in place to build the largest Russian Orthodox Church in Spain ten kilometres to the west of Marbella.
