Brits look to book holidays early

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013

An increasing number of holidaymakers are looking to book their summer trips as early as possible in an attempt to secure the best deal, new research has found.

The results of a study by Thomson Al Fresco have suggested that as many as 40 per cent of Brits will be booking next years trips during October, with the recent bad weather forcing people to think about their 2011 sunshine break.

”People are already fed up with the inclement autumn weather and they want a holiday to look forward to.” Darren Marsh, Thomson Al Fresco managing director, confirmed.

”They also want to make sure they get the holiday they want next year so book early to make sure their annual summer trip is guaranteed.”

The news may be of interest to individuals looking to rent property in Spain, with an increasing number of holidaymakers looking to book early.

Indeed, the report found that one-third of Brits heading abroad next summer will be making their way to Spain or France.

Spanish destinations ‘safe from low-cost air axe’

Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013

A number of Spanish property destinations are safe from the prospect of cuts in services by low cost airlines, it has been reported.

In a feature on the subject, the paper noted that some locations around Europe are heavily dependent on having such access and were routes to be pulled this would make access harder and holiday property consequently much less valuable.

However, it noted, the reverse is true in many places, such as the Canary Islands, where Ryanair is launching 16 new routes from this winter.

Another example is southern Spain, where Malaga airport is expanding and the year-round sunshine means plenty of flights.

Girona near Barcelona is also safe, according to local estate agent Rik de Ridder, who said that in the "unlikely" event of Ryanair pulling out, "a competitor would take their place".

The airline announced this week that it is launching a series of new services from Leeds-Bradford Airport in March 2010, including flights to Ibiza, Malaga, Murcia and Palma.

2013 Buick Verano Turbo Update 5: Justifying the Automatic - Motor Trend
Why the 2013 Buick Verano Turbo may be better with an automatic.

Although the 2013 Buick Verano with an engine upgrade is powered by a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 with 260 lb-ft of torque, the baby Buick doesn’t pretend to be a sports sedan. Rather, the boosted powerplant adds the much-needed under-hood punch the base 180-hp, 171 lb-ft 2.4-liter I-4 lacks. With the turbo 2.0-liter, the Verano’s 0-60 mph time drops to a competitive 6.4 seconds from the base model’s 8.3-second time.

Golf tourism boosting Spanish property sales

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

The popularity of golf homes is boosting property sales in Spain as overseas visitors flock to the country to hit the courses. According to IAGTO ’s 2013 Golf Tourism Report, global golf holiday sales saw a dramatic increase of 9.3 per cent year-on-year, meaning that investors are more likely to put their money into this type of development.

According to the National Golf Federation, around 56 million people worldwide take part in the sport. Furthermore, Spain remains the most popular destination in Europe for the pastime, KPMG Golf Insights 2013 underlined. While many play golf as a secondary activity on holiday, plenty travel solely for the purpose of indulging in the sport in the sun.

Indeed, it is believed that up to ten per cent of the 56 million people who play golf go abroad each year with the main purpose of their trip being to enjoy the game. This explains why sales of accommodation close to courses is increasing every year.

Marc Pritchard, sales and marketing director for Spanish house builder Taylor Wimpey Espana, commented: "Spain is one of the biggest golf destinations in the world; it’s certainly the most popular European golf location and anyone thinking of buying a golf property in Spain would definitely be making a wise move.

"Spain is poised to attract a large percentage of these golf travellers in the years to come and despite recent turbulent times for the Spanish economy, the demand for golf properties is evidently strong.”

The company reported a sales increase of 74 per cent in Mallorca last year – an island famed for its excellent golf courses. Indeed, it boasts 24 of Europe’s most luxurious courses, and the warm climate makes it an ideal location for those aiming to play a lot while there.

Moraira attracts UK-based investors

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

The small Spanish town of Moraira has much to offer Brits looking to buy property in Spain , it has been suggested.

UK-based investors have been implored to consider the region, which has grown from a small fishing village into a popular and attractive holiday and retirement destination.

Manolo Cabrera, founder of Search & Survey, said that the "quintessentially Spanish" nature of the resort meant that it has been gathering a great deal of interest from Brits over the past few years.

"Moraira is a very popular destination for UK consumers who are either considering building or buying a holiday home or retiring in Southern Spain … and there are a variety of plots and villa’s in prime locations available, making it a very attractive location for UK buyers," he added.

Within an hour’s drive from either Alicante or Valencia airport and boasting 320 days of sunshine a year, the town has an impressive marina, excellent variety of local shops, weekly open markets, harbour-side fish restaurants and bars that offer a distinctly Spanish feel.

Spanish home sales continue to fall

Sunday, December 1st, 2013

Spanish property sales are continuing to decline, falling 5.5 per cent year-on-year in June. Figures from the National Statistics Institute revealed just 23,966 transactions were made nationwide in the final month of Q2. This is the second consecutive month of decline, with sales returning to negative territory in May following a drop of 3.7 per cent.

In April it seemed things were finally starting to look up, as transactions increased by almost 11 per cent. This came after a difficult March when sales plummeted by more than 12 per cent. However, conditions appear to be difficult once again, with month-on-month sales dropping by 8.6 per cent. This equates to 1.8 per cent less than the same month in 2012, making this the lowest rate in the last five years, but still a figure the Spanish property sector will no doubt wish was greater.

New home sale declines were the main contributors to the drop, falling by 13.7 per cent to 10,301 transactions. Conversely, sales of previously owned homes increased by 1.8 per cent to 13,665. Most sales were also for private housing, which fell just 3.3 per cent to 21,443 transactions. Sales for public housing dropped by a massive 20.7 per cent to 2,523.

However, the accumulated figures for the first half of 2013 show an increase of seven per cent. The highest number of house sales per 100,000 of the population were registered in the Canary Islands at 94. This was closely followed by Valencia at 93. Nevertheless, Andalusia topped the leaderboard for overall home sales in June at 4,412 transactions. Valencia, Catalonia and Madrid also performed well at 3,811, 2,545 and 2,907 sales respectively.

The regions lagging behind were La Rioja and Navarre at just 188 and 290 transactions each. Yet in relative terms, year-on-year Navarra saw a pleasing 21.3 per cent increase in sales. The Canary Islands saw the biggest jump over the year at 24.9 per cent but Extremadura and Asturias posted significant declines of 47.9 per cent and 30.5 per cent respectively.
